Becoming a Canadian citizen is a major milestone that grants full rights, including voting and access to a Canadian passport. To be eligible, applicants must meet several criteria set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Eligibility requirements for Canadian citizenship:
- Permanent resident status: You must be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Physical presence: You must have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the last 5 years.
- Income tax filing: You must have filed taxes for at least 3 years out of the last 5.
- Language skills: Proof of proficiency in English or French (ages 18–54).
- Citizenship test: Assessing knowledge of Canada’s history, values, and laws (ages 18–54).
